Beyond the End of the World: Radical Futurability in Future Compasses

Description

Future compasses are user-generated visual texts posted in forums like Reddit that are engaged in futurability, defining themselves as “compasses dictating what the future may be or will be”. With future compasses, negotiations towards different futures take place based on users exchanging visions of the future through experimental aesthetics and cultures of play. In this work, I critically examine how future compasses subvert automated visions of the future and engage in aesthetic visions of futurability.
