Description
Besides attending this event, the research protocol on Smart Continence Care has been presented.Abstract summary within the conference hand-out:
Title: Protocol for a (Cost-)Effectiveness Study on Smart Continence Care for People With Profound Intellectuals and Multiple Disabilities through a cluster randomized trial.
By Vivette van Cooten – PhD candidate at Academy Het Dorp, Arnhem, The Netherlands, and Tranzo, Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Tilburg University, The Netherlands.
Background: Smart Continence Care (SCC) gives caregivers the opportunity for more person-centered care for people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) who cannot communicate the need to change their incontinence products. The smart continence care (SCC) product Abena Nova signals caregivers when change is needed.
A ZonMw Funded research gives us the opportunity to research the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of SCC study with people with PIMD living in long-term care facilities in the Netherlands.
Methods: A cluster randomized trial has been set up to research this, including 6 long-term care providers and 160 participants with PIMD. Quantitative data collection occurs at T0 (baseline), T1 (6 weeks), T2 (12 weeks), and T3 (9-month follow-up) for the first 2 intervention groups. Qualitative data collection through interviews and field notes gives insights into the implementation process.
Results: The primary outcome is the change in the number of leakages. Furthermore, we look into the quality of life, the difference in the number of changes, the work perception of caregivers, cost-effectiveness, and cost-utility.
Discussion: With the results of this study, long-term care providers can make informed decisions about implementing such a technology, as it provides insights into the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of SCC for people with PIMD. This is the first time that such a large-scale study is being conducted for people with PIMD.
