Description
There is increasing consensus that one cannot examine the literary without taking due account of the digital in today’s evolving media landscape (e.g. Driscoll 2024). This paper argues that to fully understand the interplay between youth literatures and citizenship within the critical framework laid out in the above papers, it is essential to address young people’s literary citizenship in the digital literary sphere. I look specifically at BookTok – the bookish subculture on the popular app TikTok – to conceptualise young readers’ everyday cultural citizenship surrounding youth literatures as a form of citizenship beyond nationhood. This is particularly relevant in today’s political climate where young people’s access to TikTok is dependent on the geopolitical relations between different nation states, further complicating the concept of citizenshipPeriod | 25 Oct 2024 |
