Communicatie speelt een cruciale rol in het succesvol managen van een crisis. Gepaste crisiscommunicatie is belangrijk om stakeholders van een organisatie te informeren en hun fysieke en/of psychologische welzijn te beschermen, maar ook om de reputatie en voortbestaan van de organisatie te waarborgen. Hoewel de inhoudelijke componenten van een crisisboodschap grotendeels bekend zijn, blijft het onduidelijk hoe deze boodschap optimaal geformuleerd kan worden. De manier waarop een crisiscommunicatiestrategie wordt verwoord kan nochtans een grote impact hebben op de perceptie van stakeholders. Het algemene doel van dit doctoraat is dan ook om de rol van taal in crisiscommunicatie beter te begrijpen.
Het eerste deel van het proefschrift behandelt de impact van specifieke taalkeuzes op de doeltreffendheid van crisiscommunicatie. De empirische hoofdstukken in dit eerste deel beschrijven experimenteel onderzoek waarin verschillende taalcues die – vanuit een sociaal psychologisch perspectief – overtuiging beïnvloeden, worden onderzocht in een crisiscommunicatiecontext. Door het opnemen van moderatoren die betrekking hebben op zowel de crisissituatie als de crisiscommunicatiestrategie, beoogt dit proefschrift te verduidelijken welke taalkeuzes een verschil maken in crisiscommunicatie en onder welke omstandigheden. Het tweede deel focust op de praktijk van crisiscommunicatie en onderzoekt hoe taal wordt gebruikt in reactie op echte crisissen. Dit proefschrift biedt nieuwe inzichten in de rol van taal in crisiscommunicatie met relevante implicaties voor onderzoek en praktijk.
Effective crisis communication is essential not only to inform an organization's stakeholders and protect their physical and/or psychological well-being but also to safeguard the organization's reputation and continuity. While the key content components of a crisis message are largely known, it remains unclear how such messages can be optimally formulated. Yet, the way in which a crisis communication strategy is put into words can have a significant impact on stakeholder’s perception. The general goal of this doctoral dissertation is therefore to better understand the role of language in crisis communication.
The first part of this dissertation addresses the impact of specific language choices on the effectiveness of crisis communication. The empirical chapters in this first part describe experimental research in which distinct linguistic cues that influence persuasion – according to a social psychological perspective – are examined in a crisis communication context. Through the inclusion of moderators that relate to contextual factors of either the crisis situation or the crisis communication strategy, this doctoral dissertation aims to clarify which language choices make a difference in crisis communication and under what circumstances. The second part turns to crisis communication practice and explores how language is used in response to actual crises. This dissertation provides novel insights into the role of language in crisis communication, providing relevant implications for research and practice.
