Description
This paper examines the accountability of purpose-oriented networks. It argues that accountability and purpose-oriented networks are both thriving and matured research fields, but that we need more research on their overlap. The main reason is the potential unintended consequences of their disconnection for the functioning of these networks and the legitimacy of accountability. On the basis of a pilot study on a number of organizational networks we develop directions for a more comprehensive and systematic study of these two phenomena which are a mark of two current societal trends, the network society and the audit society.
