Description
In search of the authentic, the contemporary tourist crowds into small spaces of intense cultural value. For the tourism industry itself this is a problem, as evidenced by the ‘vicious circle’ model of cultural tourism developed on the Venice case by Paolo Russo (2002). The effects of this negative spiral have become so evident in Venice that it now serves as a negative role model on how not to develop tourism. The case of Barcelona offers some interesting lessons for Venice in terms of dealing with mass cultural tourism.
