Description
The aim of the workshopBy ‘the right to be known’, philosophers (following Jennifer Lackey,¬ one of our keynotes), mean the right that victims of gross human rights violations have to tell their story in any way they choose in order to be truly known for who they are and for the wrongs they have suffered.
The workshop aims to create the space for dialogue between philosophers working on this topic and some of the most direct victims of apartheid¬—freedom fighters and their families. A huge thank you to Ma Antionette Sithole (sister of Hector Pietersen and one of our keynotes), for bringing together such an incredible group of speakers in the latter category!
Our hope is that our dialogue will produce collective advice on what each of us¬—victims, perpetrators, and concerned outsiders¬—can do to start repairing or overcoming the intergenerational trauma and broken relationships that are the continued legacy of apartheid.
The workshop format
The first day will comprise of talks by philosophers developing the theoretical framework for the right to be known.
The second and third day will start with a reflection on the previous day, and continue with talks by freedom fighters and family.
The second day will end with a visit to the Hector Pietersen Museum.
The third day will end with a panel aiming to come up with potential solutions.
All talks sessions will be 45 minutes long, with the speaker choosing how to divide the time between giving a talk and answering questions from the audience.
The second and third day will be facilitated by Ntate Mongane Serote, a prominent freedom fighter, national poet laureate, healer, and a co-founding Elder of our African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (ACEPS).
During those two days, we also welcome you to bring your children and grandchildren. The Hector Pietersen Museum will have an art space for them, equipped with drawing materials. The idea here is that a workshop of this kind should offer a space for creation (as well as reflection) and should involve all generations.
