Book review: Island

Press/Media: Other

Description

Island comprises 15 separate autobiographical essays by Julian Hanna, a Canadian professor at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Each of these beautifully written, efficient short pieces is set on a different island, most of them in Canada or Northern Europe, on which Hanna lived or stayed, and each gives a wholly different perspective on island living. Each one can stand alone, and the set could be read in any order. As a collection, they give a comprehensive overview—from one man's perspective—of island-related matters of culture, climate change, the Covid pandemic, and global interdependence versus a community's independence.
