The research programme ‘Texts in Contexts’ binds together academic disciplines that are inherently oriented towards sources from the Jewish-Christian tradition, from the biblical era throughout the intellectual tradition spanning from early Christianity to the present. Scholars typically investigate biblical and historical sources and discourses, in order to contextualize them and generate more insight into particular aspects of the tradition or to fathom contemporary phenomena and mechanisms precisely from the interpretation/communication modes of centuries. They underline the inherent significance of religious texts, both in themselves and in relation to the contexts in which they are (re)told, written down, and processed into new texts. The Catholic tradition is defined by shifting religious discourses and practices, reflected in evolving texts that function within changing contexts. Researchers thus examine and engage with religious sources (foundational texts, practices, imaginations) both historically and in relation to, and in dialogue with, contemporary issues such as economics, leadership, Church and spirituality, interreligiosity, and sustainability. They do this in collaboration with scientists from other disciplines, such as economics, management, and the humanities.
