Personal profile

Research interests

My research covers various aspects of criminal justice, including legal defence, the criminalisation of activism and miscarriages of justice. It also examines prison law and the complexities of disenfranchisement, topics I've explored through comparative studies of solitary confinement and prisoners' voting rights. I have published on the evolution of sexual offences and the legal understanding of consent, analysing the recent changes in criminal semantics. I've also worked on professional secrecy, focusing on its role in criminal investigations and how it intersects with journalists' rights and democratic principles. I have published in English, French and Dutch.

My current research focuses on the criminalisation of social activism, restrictions on freedom of expression and whistleblower protection in comparative, European and international law, with particular expertise in French law.

I also lead a project that translates academic research on criminal justice into children's books.

Career

I studied law at the French university Panthéon-Assas and at the University of Oxford (Balliol College), receiving my masters in criminal law in 2013. The same year, I started a PhD on a scholarship at Panthéon-Assas, while lecturing there, as well as at Sciences Po Paris and the University of Lille. I defended my prize-winning PhD on 'Special justifications' (a form of legal defence) in 2018; it was published as a monograph in 2020. I then started as an Assistant Professor in the University of Reims, receiving tenure in 2021. Having moved to the Netherlands with my family, I joined Tilburg University in 2023 as Assistant Professor in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. Since 2024, I am a member of the Commissie Meijers (Criminal Law sub-committee).
