Research interests

Carol X.J. Ou is a Professor of Business Information Systems at Tilburg University. She obtained her PhD from the Department of Information Systems at City University of Hong Kong. 

Carol's current research interests now focus on digital transformation (DT), covering two streams of research. The first research stream investigates how commercial, healthcare, military, and governmental organizations are transformed by new technologies via AI governance, DT strategy, leadership, organizational structural change, as well as steering and control. Her second research stream examines how digital platforms are renovated by emerging technologies, including AI, algorithm and content contrition in social media, online marketplace, mobile apps, and omnichannel. She deploys action research, case studies, field surveys, social network analysis, econometrics, and applied business analytics in her projects. Her publications and editorials have appeared in MIS Quarterly (MISQ), Journal of Operations Management (JOOM), Journal of Management Information Systems (JMIS), Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS), and Information Systems Journal (ISJ), among others. 

Carol has been selected as the Distinguished Member - Cum Laude - of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in 2023. She has served as a Senior Editor for Information Systems Journal, Information & Management, as well as IT and People. Carol is also a Certified IS Auditor, and has served as the Academic Advocate at IS Audit and Control Association since 2011. She chairs or serves as a committee member in various conferences on IS and IT. Carol has broad collaborations with governments, organizations, and companies. Recently Carol and her team obtained the DSfS research grant on "AI Deployment in Healthcare". Over the past years, she has led or participated in project grants of over €5 million. 

Career

Before joining Tilburg University, Carol worked at the City University of Hong Kong, and also Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where she received several research grants, as well as awards for excellence in teaching and research. She was the Head of Management Department, Tilburg University between 2019-2023. With all faculty members' contributions and efforts, the Department grew significantly. She has now been elected as the representative of Tilburg University Council.
