Research interests

Daan van Soest is an environmental economist who focuses on using behavioral insights and (field-) experimental methods to assess and improve the effectiveness of environmental policy making – in developed countries, and also in developing countries. 

Career

Appointments:

  • Since September 2013: Professor of Environmental Economics, Tilburg University;
  • January 2009 - August 2013: Professor of Environmental Economics at VU University Amsterdam (0.6 fte);
  • June 2006 - August 2013: Associate Professor, Tilburg University (0.4 fte from Jan. 1, 2009, onwards);
  • July 1998 - May 2006: Assistant Professor at Tilburg University (tenured since Jan. 1, 2004);
  • October 1997 - June 1998:Economic Advisor to the General Secretary of ATIBT, Association Technique des Bois Tropicaux, Paris. Coordination of sustainable forest management projects in tropical rainforests;
  • September 1993 - September 1997: Ph.D. student at the Faculty of Economics at Groningen University (The Netherlands).

  • Co-head of department, Department of Economics, Tilburg University (2021-);
  • Academic director, Tilburg Sustainability Center (2013-2020);
  • Chair (2006–2010) and member (2003–2006), Educational Board of the BSc and MSc of Economics, and of the BSc and MSc of International Economics and Finance, Tilburg University.
