Research interests

My most recent publications incude a book in the domain of political philosphy and constutional theory, entitled 'Waakzaam burgerschap: Vertrouwen in democratie en rechtsstat herwinnen' (Amsterdam: Querido Facto 2022) and a monography including my farewell address at Tilburg University, entitled 'Peace and Justice', https://ernsthirschballin.nl/reports-addresses-and-speeches/. New projects are part of the working program of the Scientific Council for Government Police (Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid).

Swelections of my publications which appeared between 1991 and 2021 were published in two collections, entitled 'Trust Beyond Borders. Selected Papers on the Significance of Human Rights and the Rule of Law' (Eleven Publishers, The Hague 2022) and 'Recht doorgronden, Keuze uit wetenschappelijk werk over publiekrecht, rechtsstaat en beleid' (Boom juridisch, Den Haag 2022).

In 2020, I published at Edward Elgar an innovative 'Advanced Introduction to Legal Research Methods'. Together with Teun Jaspers and André Knottnerus, I edited and co-authored a collection of essays on the future of social security in the Netherlands, published at Boom juridsisch in 2021.

The long-standing flagship project of the Tilburg University Department of Public Law and Governance  "Commentaar op de Grondwet", formerly edited by Alis Koekkoek, now continued by Ernst Hirsch Ballin, Eric Janse de Jonge en Gert-Jan Leenknegt, has since five years been available as a web publication in open access and was in 2021 published by Boom juridisch as a book, entitled "Uitleg van de Grondwet".

A new English language flagship project is the European Yearbook of Constitutional Law, founded by Ernst Hirsch Ballin and Gerhard van der Schyff, and is published by Asser Press with Springer.
