Career

Prof. Henk F.L. Garretsen is a sociologist and epidemiologist B. He is emeritus professor of health care policy at Tranzo, scientific center for care and welfare at Tilburg University. From 2000 - 2017 he was director of Tranzo. In the past, he was, among others, professor of addiction at Erasmus University Rotterdam, director of the Institute for Research on Lifestyles and Addiction (IVO) Rotterdam and member of the management team of the Regional Office for Public Health Rotterdam area.

Henk Garretsen is, among others, elected vice president of the Kettil Bruun Society for Social and Epidemiological Research on Alcohol; member of the Health Council of the Netherlands; Chairman of the Knowledge Platform Prevention, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport; member of the Supervisory Board of the National Regieorgaan Praktijkgericht Onderzoek SIA, The Dutch Research Council (NWO); Chairman of the Central Committee Prevention Program 6 (PP6), the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw); Chairman Committee Lifestyle Medicine, ZonMw; member of the  ‘bezwaarschriften commissie” (objections commission), NWO/ZonMw; member of the “Kamer Middel” of the National Science Agenda, NOW; chairman of the ZonMw Committee for the Sensory Disabled, chairman of the Supervisory Board  of the Netherlands School of Public and Occupational Health, member of the Supervisory Board of the  Trimbos Institute, member of the Advisory Board of GGzE (Mental Health Eindhoven area) and Member of the Supervisory Board of Helmond-Peel Library.

In the past he was, among others, chairman and member of the scientific committee of the The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA, Lisbon); vice president of the Kettil Bruun Society for Social and Epidemiological Research on Alcohol; scientific coordinator of the European Research Area Network on Illicit Drugs (ERANID); chairman of the Addiction Forum; chairman of the Dutch Association of Public Health and Science; Member of the Provincial Council Health Noord-Brabant;  chairman of the Expert Committee on Lists Systematics of the Opium Act and chairman or member of a number of ZonMw committees.
