Research interests

Dr. van Erp teaches political philosophy and general ethics since 1970. Important authors for him are Kant, Hegel, Marx, Popper, Rawls en Levinas. The main object of his research concerns questions as: What is, from a moral point of view, the relation between moral responsibility and political obligation? Do political obligations have priority over special moral obligations, so yes, under what terms? Is there a moral legitimation or duty for democracy? The meaning of the principle of universality and of its application in ethics.

He retired in 2008 and is still connected, as adjunct professor, at the University of Fort Hare (South Africa)

1979: senior lecturer for philosophy of the social sciences, Faculty of Philosophy

1989: associate professor for social philosophy and philosophical anthropology

1998: associate professor for social philosophy and general ethics
