Research interests

Dr Igor Nikolic is Assistant Professor in Competition Law at Tilburg University. He researches and writes in all areas of competition law and policy but has a particular interest in field of standardisation and standard essential patents. In particular he specialises in the following areas:


  • regulation of standardisation; the relationship between intellectual property and competition laws with international standardisation 
  • the legal and economic framework for licensing Standard Essential Patents; the meaning of FRAND licensing obligation
  • competition law and digital economy
  • the relationship between competition law and intellectual property rights
  • regulation of innovation
  • the control and access to data in digital economy





Igor Nikolic is an Assistant Professor in Competition Law at Tilburg University from April 2019. Prior to that, he worked as a PhD Researcher at University College London (2015-2018) and obtained LLM degree from the University of Groningen (with honours). His PhD thesis concerned the FRAND licensing framework of standard essential patents in the context of Internet of Things. At UCL he was also a research assistant to prof Ioannis Lianos where he worked on a number of commissioned projects. Dr Nikolic taught competition law as a visiting lecturer at King’s College London and Turin University. He is also a qualified attorney at law and advises on competition law issues and was involved in a number of studies for World Bank in competition policy area.
