Research interests

Irmgard Borghouts- van de Pas is ass professor Labour Market and Social Security at ReflecT, Research Institute for Flexicurity, Labour Market Dynamics and Social Cohesion at Tilburg University.

Fields of expertise and interests are social security, employment security, labour market, participation, (prevention of) unemployment and social integration.

She has won the  annual Science Award of the German Stiftung Bildung und Beschäftigung for her 2012 PhD thesis, a comparative study of employment security systems in European countries. T

The award was presented in Berlin on November 18, 2016

The award was presented by Bernd Reissert, Professor of Political Sciences at the Berlin School of Economics and Law and Dr. Heinz Hinrich Schmidt, who also serve on the board of the German foundation. While the award usually goes to German research, the jury found Borghouts? international study, cited in academic literature, to be both remarkable and relevant to Germany. The Stiftung Bildung und Beschäftigung (Foundation for Education, Training and Employment) encourages research and projects that aim to prevent mass unemployment by providing guidance to unemployed workers who are trying to find a new job ? the kind of support that is in great demand in Germany, too.

 

In her PhD thesis, Borghouts examines job-to-job transition systems in four European countries (Sweden, the United Kingdom, Austria and Spain) and she continues to explore the theme. She is currently studying the effects of job-to-job transitions in the Netherlands. This study is financially supported by Instituut GAK, a Dutch donor-advised fund that also subsidized Borghouts? PhD project. 

Career

Irmgard Borghouts -van de Pas (1973) studied Labour market and Social security at Tilburg University. She obtained her Masters degree in 1998. Subsequently she worked for the local council Utrecht as a researcher in the field of Labour and Social Afffairs.

Between 1999-2005 she was researcher and consultant at IVA, Institute for Social Research at Tilburg University.

Between 2005 en 2009 she was a senior researcher at OSA, Institute for Labour Studies.

Since 1 March 2009 she is a senior researcher at ReflecT, Research Institute for Flexicurity, Labour Market Dynamics and Social Cohesion at Tilburg University. Fields of expertise and interests are social security, labour market policies, (prevention) of unemployment and social integration.

As from 1 April 2012 until March 2014 Borghouts was also attached to Ecorys Nederland as principal consultant

In november 2016 Irmgard Borghouts has won the the annual Science Award of the German Stiftung Bildung und Beschäftigung for her 2012 PhD thesis, a comparative study of employment security systems in European countries. The award was presented in Berlin on November 18.
