Computational Auditing. How can we use computational techniques to help auditors assess reliability (accuracy and completeness) of reporting? With Rob Christiaanse I am developing model-based auditing, a computational approach to auditing and monitoring that makes use of a normative model of the expected relationships between the flow of money and goods (value-cycle). See for example ICAIL, IJISMD. I am also interested in other computational approaches to monitoring and auditing, such as continuous control monitoring, and process mining. See for example CCM-R and IJEGR.
Contract Negotiation and Monitoring. With Kartik Chawla and Stéphanie van Gulijk (TLS) I work on an approach to give data subjects more control over their personal data. It is based on the idea that private law, about contracts, is better suited to protect rights of citizens than public law frameworks like the GDPR, because data is often provided as a kind of 'payment' for a service. We are developing an architecture for contract negotiation and monitoring data protection rights. See ERPL, JURIX'2020, and IMPACT proposal.
Regulatory Compliance What is the role of information systems in demonstrating compliance to laws and regulations? Earlier we looked at the adoption of the XBRL reporting standard (GIQ). With Brigitte Burgemeestre I developed value-based argumentation to model audit dialogues, and dialogues about security measures. See AI and law, Ethics and IT. With Vera Kartseva, Jaap Gordijn and Yao-Hua Tan we developed a set of control patterns based on value modelling, using e3-value. See EJIS and ICEIS 2010.
Normative Multi-agent Systems. With Leon van der Torre, Zhisheng Huang, Mehdi Dastani and Jan Broersen, I developed the BOID, a cognitive agent architecture with beliefs, obligations, intentions and desires. I continue to work on so called normative multi-agent systems (NMAS): multi-agent systems regulated by norms.
Dialogue My PhD thesis, supervised by Anton Nijholt at the University of Twente, describes formal models of dialogue for the design and testing of natural language dialogue systems. See the yearly workshops on Semantics and Pragmatics of Dialogue.
