Career

Merel Jung is an assistant professor at the department of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence at Tilburg University. She is also affiliated with the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS). Her current research interests cover the automatic recognition of human behavior in interpersonal and human-robot interaction using machine learning (social signal processing) with a focus on touch/haptic interaction.

Previously she has hold post-doctoral researcher positions at the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science on the topic of medical image analysis using deep learning and in interaction design at the University of Twente on the topic of assistive technology. In 2107, she obtained her PhD on the automatic recognition of human touch behavior for socially intelligent robots. Her background is in psychology, she received both her bachelor’s degree (2010) and master’s degree (2012, Cum laude) at the department of Cognitive Psychology and Ergonomics at the University of Twente.
