Personal profile
Research interests
Miguel is a trained lawyer, human rights practitioner, and PhD candidate at Tilburg Law School. His current research explores the legal constitution of territory in public international law, through the empirical case studuies of the external borders of the European Union and the occupation of the Palestinian territory. Miguel is interested in the way in which law, place and power interact in contemporary global settings, particularly in the context of migration (EU Southern Borders) and protracted territorial occupations (Israel/Palestine). His disciplinary background combines a doctrinal legal training, mostly in general international law, with studies in political philosophy.
Miguel teaches international law courses to undergraduate and graduate students and supervises masters theses for the LLM program in International Law and Global Governance. In 2024, he was voted Best Tutorial Teacher 2023-24 (English language) by Tilburg Law School students.
Previously, Miguel had been working as a human rights advocate with the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (2016-2021), the European Parliament (2015-2016) and the European Court of Human Rights (2014-2015). He holds an EM.A in Human Rights and Democratisation (European Inter-University Centre), M.Res in Political Philosophy (UNED), and LL.M in Law (University of Seville).
