Personal profile

Research interests

My primary expertise lies in European and comparative privacy and data protection law. My doctoral dissertation explored the idea of property rights in personal data embedded in the US and European legal contexts. I argued that framing data protection rights erga omnes - even without the formal 'property' label - would be consistent with the European approach to data protection, create a de-facto property right in personal data and would achieve individual control over his/her data more effectively. I have expanded my research into the area of economic analysis of privacy and data protection law, in particular, data protection rights as entitlements and personal data as a  resource. I have conducted research on the policy studies of data protection, in particular, the role of private actors in the data protection rule-setting.

In 2016 I was awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant to conduct a five-year research project ?Understanding information for legal protection of people against information-induced harms? (ERC-2016-StG-716971 INFO-LEG). The project aims to re-examine conceptual foundations of the data protection law and commenced in March 2017.
