Research interests

My main teaching and research focuses are canonization, adaptation, picture books, crossover literature, ideology criticism, and cultural diversity.

Current research project: Beyond the Mirror? An Inquiry into Cultural Diversity in Dutch Children's Books in the Twenty-First Century (November 2016 - )

The goal of this study is to chart the representation of cultural diversity and intercultural exchange in Dutch-language children's books from 2000 up until the present. In the first stage of the project, an inventory of culturally diverse children's books will be compiled. In a subsequent phase, a sample of these books will be scrutinised in detail.

The analyses aim to lay bare the way in which ethnicity is framed and how the relationship between different ethnic and cultural groups is shaped. One of the main questions is whether the receiving culture or the home culture is foregrounded, or whether intercultural exchange count as a norm.
