My dissertation focuses on firms? engagement in divestitures of their original or legacy business taking the perspective of organizational change. I planned three essays to theoretically and empirically investigate the antecedents and performance consequences of legacy divestiture. Essay 1 tests the inertial forces that constrain a firm?s efforts in engaging in legacy divestitures, and it explores the moderating factors related to a firm?s motivation, opportunities, and capabilities to change which may reduce the constraining effect of the inertia. Essay 2 examines the stock market response to legacy divestitures.Essay 3 tests the implications of legacy divestiture for a firm?s innovation performance.
