This project will draw on the rich literature on the nature and norms of scientific inquiry, as well as from the emerging literature on zetetic epistemology (Friedman, 2020), to identify the practices constitutive of democratic decision-making and the norms that should govern them. In a first instance, the objective of this exploration is to make theoretical headway, shedding light on the nature and normativity of democratic decision-making to clarify how we should proceed when collectively deciding on political matters. But more significantly, the project aims to leverage this exploration to address two central challenges to contemporary democratic governance.
