Bias Against Artificial Intelligence in Art: Looking for a Human Connection?

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used by artists, yet audiences respond more favourably to artworks they believe are solely human-made. One reason may be that people seek a human connection in art through visual cues that reveal the artist’s intentions, emotions, and motivations. As AI lacks these qualities its involvement may diminish audiences’ aesthetic judgment. This project relies on wearable eye-tracking technology in an exhibition setting to measure how viewers focus on these cues and how this relates to their aesthetic judgment. The project explicates the influence of AI-use on aesthetic experiences, driving new research into a renewed role of human connection in art.
