Feeding Connections: City Networks and the Pathways to Sustainable Food Governance

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

The project, Feeding Connections: City Networks and the Pathways to Sustainable Food Governance, explores how city networks can drive the integration of sustainability into local food policies. With food systems at the nexus of climate, biodiversity, and public health challenges, cities have emerged as pivotal actors in promoting sustainable practices. City networks such as the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact and C40 Food Systems Network provide platforms for knowledge sharing, innovation, and collaborative problem-solving. However, the mechanisms by which these networks enable effective policy learning and diffusion remain underexplored.
To fill this gap, the research will utilize a multi-method approach. Network Analysis will map the structural dynamics of city networks, identifying key actors and pathways for policy diffusion. Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) will systematically examine conditions that enable the successful integration of sustainability into local policies. Finally, Process-Tracing will explore the causal mechanisms and interactions within specific case studies.
A key output will be an interactive smart map visualizing the connections and dynamics within and across city networks, offering an accessible tool for stakeholders. The project ultimately seeks to enhance understanding of how city networks can catalyze sustainable transformation in food governance, providing actionable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and academics.
