Intentionality and conciousness constitute problems for the physicalist self-conception of cognitive science. The relationship between intentionality and consciousness is investigated and several recent physicalist theories of conciousness are evaluated. The role of perception in the emergence of consciousness is studied from an evolutionary point of view. The question is raised whether a naturalistic theory of perception is compatible with standard physicalist views on the nature of intentionality.
