Project Details
Description
This project - funded through the Incentive Grant Scheme of the Dutch Government 'Stimuleringsbeurs' - seeks to deepen our understanding of the ways in which corporations can be liable for health and livelihood-related risks in global value chains. In studying corporate liability for persistent risk within these chains, the project will sail the waters between the law of contracts, torts, and corporations. The objective is to describe and explain the boundaries of civil liability of corporate actors within global value chains, and unpack the conditions under which they are answerable in law for harm caused to consumers, workers, local communities and others affected by the business operations with the chain. Two PhD projects are involved: one focusing on liability for harm caused to health and livelihood of locals in commodity chains (garments, electronics, etc) and another focusing on the liability for material and immaterial harm caused by systems of artificial intelligence (AI).
