Understanding the Negative Impact of AI on Open Source Software Development Communities

This project explores the underexamined maintenance challenges arising from the widespread adoption of AI-assisted code development in Open Source Software (OSS) communities. While current research has focused on productivity gains from tools like GitHub Copilot, little attention has been given to how these tools affect software quality and introduce new burdens on OSS maintainers. By combining GitHub data, surveys, and interviews, we aim to analyze how AI-assisted code development impacts OSS maintenance activities and identify the support needed by maintainers. This project identifies the hidden costs of AI integration in software development
