Project Details
Description
Subproject 2 adressess the societal downsides of the success of the Dutch logistics industry in becoming a major storage location for Europe. In the Netherlands a public debate has grown around the XXL warehouses that have been built on greenfields in the countryside and suburban space . In inner cities, e-commerce fulfillment depots denoted as “dark stores“ have grown rapidly over the past 12 months to serve consumers with a desire to have their groceries delivered within ten minutes. The Dutch term ‘verdozing’ encompasses everything that is negative about these facilities. This subproject incorporates the perspectives of supply chains, spatial planning, regulations and consumer behaviour in an optimization model that can generate comprehensive assessments of the (limits to) growth of the storage industry in the Netherlands.
