Abstract
In this paper, two cornerstone game design and research models — the Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics framework and the magic circle — are revisited and inspected through a lens of user experience design. This suggests two aspects that are missing from these models: a clear distinction between the intended and actual player experience, and the inclusion of transfer of knowledge, actions, and emotions between the game world and the real world, as part of the player experience. Based on these observations, a new unified model is proposed.
