Abstract
In the study “Abolishing fossil fuel subsidies: a brain teaser rather than a no-brainer” CPB and PBL conclude that the discussion on fossil fuel subsidies in the Netherlands focuses primarily on the level of tax revenue that is potentially foregone due to exemptions or reduced rates of taxes on energy. In doing so, little attention seem to be paid to the underlying core question: does changing a fossil fuel subsidy scheme contribute to the energy transition and thus to climate policy?
