Abstract
Clearly, data science is likely to act as an enabling as well as disruptive technology in the domain of legal services. But the challenges here are complex, among others given the specifics of the language of legal authority as well as the influence of legal tradition. This language and tradition is constructed on method and system, within which the paradigms founded in legal principles, judicial precedent and legislative provisions play a key role. Formulated in more simple terms, a court ruling is not merely a decision based on the facts and circumstance at hand, but also the outcome of fitting a particular case within the overall legal system and tradition. This article discusses the various opportunities and challenges of using AI in the domain of the judiciary.
