Aquinas in the Reformed Theologians Petrus Martyr Vermilius (1499-1562) and Hieronymus Zanchius (1516-1590)

Peter Martyr Vermigli and Girolamo Zanchi are often pictured as
being heavily influenced by the thougth of Thomas Aquinas. In this
paper I argue that this is not correct in the case of Vermigli. The
number of positive references in his works to Aquinas by name are limited and regard minor theological issues. More substantive theological similarities between Vermigli and Aquinas can be explained as common knowledge, shared by most medieval scholastics. I discuss the doctrine of predestination, which is a key issue in Vermigli’s theology, in more detail and try to show that Vermigli endorses a view of “double-particular election” while Aquinas holds “single-particular election". Zanchi is much more indebted to Aquinas. Nevertheless, his doctrine of God has some elements that betray a Scotist influence.
