Abstract

This paper introduces the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) and advocates the introduction of this interview in forensic psychiatry to improve the psychiatric diagnostics of migrants. The CFI can be useful when the cultural gap between the examiner and the person examined is significant. The inclusion of the cultural context increases the understanding of the symptoms and the examined person in their own social, (sub-) cultural environment. The CFI was not developed specifically for forensic psychiatry, but for clinical practice in general. Therefore, this tool should be adapted and refined for forensic psychiatry and psychology. In addition, a second aspect of the assessment among migrants is discussed: the transcultural risk assessment. There are almost no validated instruments, but the HCR-20 appears to be broad
enough and to be valid in most societies.
