Abstract
Although communication provides an important instrument for improving autonomous motivation, there is little insight into the processes that underlie the relationship between communication and autonomous communication. This survey (among 183 Dutch employees) aims to improve that insight. Results confirm that communication satisfaction is positively related to autonomous motivation through a double mediation process: communication satisfaction (with the leader and group) stimulates the fit employees experience between their work environment (person-leader fit and person-group fit), which gratifies employee needs (the need for autonomy and relatedness, in particular), and stimulates autonomous motivation. This study strengthens our insight into the processes that underlie autonomous motivation and confirms that autonomous motivation is threatened in case of communication problems because employees alienate from their work environment and do not longer gratify their needs.
