Creative tourism: A tale of two papers

Abstract

This paper reviews the impacts of two papers published in Annals of Tourism Research: Richards (2011) Creativity and tourism: The state of the art and Richards (2020) Designing creative places: The role of creative tourism, which cover theoretical and applied aspects of creative tourism respectively. Impacts in terms of policymaking, communities and tourism development, the tourism industry and placemaking are reviewed, highlighting their role in developing the creative tourism concept as an alternative to traditional models and a basis for sustainable development. Critiques of the creative tourism concept are also considered. This review illustrates the widespread use and application of these creative tourism sources by academics and practitioners.
