Data-driven mergers in healthcare: an EU competition law perspective

Abstract

A review of two recent data-driven mergers in the healthcare sector illustrates how economic concerns relating to competition have become increasingly intertwined with non-economic considerations regarding privacy and health protection, among others. We argue that this development requires the European Commission and the respective national authorities to take a more proactive approach, and we make suggestions for achieving stronger coordination and cooperation within the current regulatory framework.
