Abstract
Hoe kwam de cynische schrijver Willem Frederik Hermans, die vond dat literatuur niet meer mocht zijn dan een amorele ‘persoonlijke mythologie’, tot een ethisch gemotiveerde cultuur- en maatschappijkritiek? Om dit mysterie op te lossen zonder onrecht te doen aan de modernistische paradoxen in Hermans’ oeuvre, destilleerde de auteur een culturele spelfilosofie uit het freudiaanse en post-freudiaanse denken (Jacques Lacan en Slavoj Žižek). De lezing voert van Hermans’ biografie en essayistiek naar zijn meest surreële verhalen uit verhalenbundel Paranoia, de politiek en ideologiekritiek in de roman Ik heb altijd gelijk, de collaboratie en het verraad van Christiaan (‘King Kong’) Lindemans en Friedrich Weinreb, en de rol van natuurwetenschap en fotografie in Nooit meer slapen en ‘De blinde fotograaf’.
