Abstract

This dissertation consists of three essays on different topics within the field of health economics. The first essay uses individuals who move across regions in the Netherlands to disentangle the demand and supply causes of regional variation in healthcare expenditures. The second essay studies the effects of an entry liberalization reform in the Portuguese over-the-counter pharmaceutical market on prices and competition between retailers. The third and final chapter of the dissertation investigates whether and to what extent the availability of subsidized nursing homes and home-care teams reduces bed-blocking in Portuguese public hospitals.
