Abstract

This dissertation comprises four chapters, including the introduction. The three
main chapters examine the determinants of regional variation in health and
healthcare utilization across different population groups. The first chapter
investigates the role of internal migration over a 20-year period in shaping
regional differences in healthcare costs across provinces in the Netherlands. It
highlights how changes in population composition due to migration contribute
to these variations. The second chapter shifts focus to refugees, analyzing how
municipal characteristics influence their healthcare utilization. Importantly,
refugees in the Netherlands are assigned to municipalities independently of their
healthcare utilization, providing a unique setting to isolate the impact of location. The third chapter turns to the stayers or non-migrants and explores how natural environmental factors, specifically sunset times across districts in India, affect individuals’ long-term health outcomes.
