Abstract
Essays on Socioeconomic Inequalities explores disparities across various stages
of the lifespan, focusing on topics related to health economics, labor economics,
and education economics. The second chapter investigates how much of the
educational disparities in health can be explained by adverse health behaviors,
providing evidence that for some types of risky behavior, individual-specific
factors – rather than the behaviors alone – often drive these differences. The third chapter studies the effect of a substantial change in the Dutch pension system on workers’ labor supply at old age, income, and health outcomes. It reports a positive impact of the reform on income and old-age labor supply, alongside negative health effects for both men and women. The fourth chapter examines the role of the place where individuals grow up on the transmission of socioeconomic status from parents to children in the Dutch context. It documents no long lasting effects of place on individuals’ educational attainment and income, which is in sharp contrast to the US.
