N2 - The ILUSTRE Lab (Innovation Lab for Utilities on Sustainable Technology and Renewable Energy) focuses on the development, testing, and deployment of AI-driven solutions for sustainable utility systems in Curaçao and the wider Caribbean and Latin American region. As part of the ROBUST program on Trustworthy AI-based Systems for Sustainable Growth, funded by the NWO Long-Term Program, ILUSTRE operates as an ICAI (Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence) lab, bringing together Dutch and Caribbean universities, government agencies, and utility companies. The lab addresses key challenges in clean energy transition, water treatment, and wastewater recycling through five research work packages: renewable energy forecasting, AI-based decision support for water treatment, predictive maintenance of energy and water infrastructure, grid balancing and demand response, and the societal embedding of AI in critical infrastructure. Each work package is pursued by a dedicated Ph.D. or postdoctoral researcher and is grounded in real-world applications through close collaboration with local utility providers. This report documents a field visit to Curaçao conducted from 17 to 24 November 2024 by the ILUSTRE delegation. The visit aimed to engage stakeholders, strengthen academic–industrial collaboration, gain insights into local infrastructure, and identify opportunities for integrating AI research into operational settings. The visit also contributed to team building and laid a strong foundation for the next phase of the ILUSTRE project.
