Abstract
The first publication in the Netherlands about Buddhism was written by the folklorist Joast Hiddes Halbertsma. He defended an intrinsic connection between Frisian and Sanskrit, proposing a parallel between the Lotus in India and the Pompeblêd in Frisia. The ideological outlook of Halbertsma as a baptist minister brought him to a severe criticism of established Christianity, by drawing a parallel between the Reformation and Buddhism.
