Abstract
Platform workers are likely to hold multiple jobs. Precisely as the word gig economy indicates, workers performing work through digital apps often combine gigs with other types of paid work, either as an employee or as self-employed. Against this background, this chapter discusses (the lack of) employment law protection of platform workers with multiple jobs (the so-called multi-jobbers). Even if a platform worker has an employment contract with one or more platforms, there are still problems in the application of certain rules. Moreover, there is an increasing number of so-called hybrid workers, who combine employment with work as independent contractor. The author identifies the main risks and barriers to employment protection and exposes gaps in current Dutch legislation. These can be grouped in four areas: (1) pay, (2) contractual restrictions on ancillary work, (3) working time, and (4) work-life balance.
