Abstract
How does one become a reader and how does one keep reading? Not because you have to for school, but because it's fun. This is only possible by having positive reading experiences and that is only possible with the help of others.
The (almost) reader and the other are central to this book. Mia Stokmans (Tilburg University) has incorporated everything that is now known from research about reading goals, reading motivation and successful reading promotion in what she has dubbed 'the reading hunger model'. This model describes how others can create and herd readers. These others make non-readers interested in books. They help them choose a book, entice them to actually read it and ask about reading experiences. This role of the other is especially necessary for non-readers and occasional readers. But fervent readers also seek out others; to exchange reading experiences and to get good tips for a next reading adventure.
This book offers insight into how readers are born and offers practical tools for reading promotion. All this under the motto: you don't read alone, but together.
