Abstract

Smart meters and the detailed data they provide have become essential instruments to achieve the aims of the Twin Transitions (Green and Digital) in the European Union. This chapter delves into the role of smart meters under the ongoing Twin Transitions, as well as their (at times complicated) relationship with the rights to privacy and personal data protection. The chapter provides an overview of the latest legal developments and academic contributions on this topic, identifying current debates and paths for future research.
