abstract = " This chapter examines the potential of children's travel literature to impart intercultural competencies to the young readership. It does so through the examples of a French and a German travelogue for pre-teens: “In Afrika war ich nie allein” (Marie-Th{\'e}r{\`e}se Schins, 2003) and “Le journal de Roxane Vernet au S{\'e}n{\'e}gal” (Isabelle Lebrat, 2006). Using theories of interculturality, especially that of intercultural education, and linguistic theories of verbal interactions, the chapter analyzes the implementation (or lack thereof) of a narrative device that allows the reader an {"}encounter{"} with people from another culture through fiction.",
