Abstract

This chapter examines the potential of children's travel literature to impart intercultural competencies to the young readership. It does so through the examples of a French and a German travelogue for pre-teens: “In Afrika war ich nie allein” (Marie-Thérèse Schins, 2003) and “Le journal de Roxane Vernet au Sénégal” (Isabelle Lebrat, 2006). Using theories of interculturality, especially that of intercultural education, and linguistic theories of verbal interactions, the chapter analyzes the implementation (or lack thereof) of a narrative device that allows the reader an "encounter" with people from another culture through fiction.
