Abstract
Together with Fritz Ernst, Jan Cremers (Tilburg Law School) was commissioned by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) to examine how the European Union can close a gap in the protection of mobile migrant labor, namely, the absence of a structure by means of which mobile migrant workers can obtain low-threshold, trustworthy, cross-border counselling and support in the enforcement of labor standards and workers’ rights. The report is part of the series Future of Work and reflects the possibilities to anchor local counselling in a more permanent, EU-wide network, facilitated by the European Labour Authority. The recommendations are based on the notion that tailor-made and autonomous forms of protection of the interests of the "weakest party" are required. The ideas are intended to feed directly into the process of the drafting of the European Commission’s Fair Labour Mobility Package that is expected in September 2026.
