    Abstract

Reinhart Dozy was one of the in the Netherlands first to study Islam. His Biblical knowledge helped him on the one hand, but coupled with his liberal and anti-Catholic outlook, brought him to a curious theory of a stone religion in the Hebrew Bible. This veneration of stones would then be exported to Mecca by Jews centuries before Islam. His general view of Islam as superstitious and primitive coincides with his view of Catholicism.
